Poster Print vs Enlargement: Which Is Right for Poster Printing in Singapore?
If your print is going on a wall, a window or an event board to be read from a few metres away, a poster print is the right choice, and that is exactly what our poster printing in Singapore is built for: A3 to A0 on matt poster paper or self-adhesive poster sticker, with lamination and mounting options. A photo enlargement is the better fit for one treasured photograph you want to frame and look at up close. The rest of this guide explains the difference, so you can pick the right one before you send a file.
What is a poster print?
A poster print is a large-format print made for display. It is designed to be seen from across a room, a corridor or a shopfront, so it is usually built around strong graphics, a clear headline and a short message rather than fine photographic detail. Posters normally come in standard ISO sizes. These are the four we print:
- A3 (297 × 420mm): counters, lift lobbies, notice boards
- A2 (420 × 594mm): classroom walls, office corridors, small windows
- A1 (594 × 841mm): event walls, retail windows, exhibition panels
- A0 (841 × 1189mm): backdrops and large feature displays
A poster is also a working object. It gets pinned, taped, stuck to glass, carried to an event and sometimes stood on a table. That is why poster printing comes with practical add-ons: lamination to protect the surface, a self-adhesive version for windows and walls, and rigid mounting so it can stand up on its own.
What is a photo enlargement?
A photo enlargement is a photograph printed larger than a standard snapshot, traditionally on photographic paper. The goal is different. An enlargement tries to reproduce a single image as faithfully as possible, with smooth skin tones, fine texture and deep shadows, because people view it from arm's length, usually behind glass in a frame.
Enlargements are common for portraits, wedding and family photos, travel shots and art photography. The source is almost always one photograph, not a layout with text and logos. Photo papers are usually offered in finishes such as gloss, lustre or satin, and the print is rarely laminated or mounted on foam, because a frame does the protecting.
Poster print vs enlargement: the key differences
Both are "big prints", which is why people mix them up. The differences show once you look at how each one is used.
Viewing distance
This is the biggest factor. A poster is judged from two to five metres away, so bold type, high contrast and simple shapes matter more than tiny detail. An enlargement is judged from half a metre, so every bit of photographic detail counts. If people will walk past your print, choose a poster. If they will stop and study it, an enlargement makes sense.
Content
Posters carry mixed content: headlines, dates, QR codes, logos, product shots and calls to action. Enlargements carry one photograph. If your file was made in Illustrator, Canva or InDesign and has text on it, it is a poster.
Size range
Poster printing scales up comfortably to A1 and A0, the sizes that fill a wall or a window. Photo enlargements are more often ordered at desk and small-wall sizes, where people view them up close.
Finish and protection
A poster often has to survive handling, sunlight through glass, air-conditioning and the odd accidental bump. Lamination adds a protective film, and mounting makes it rigid. An enlargement is usually protected by its frame instead.
Where it lives
Posters go to retail windows, event walls, exhibition booths, classrooms, clinics and office lobbies. Enlargements go to living rooms, bedrooms and gallery-style walls at home.
When a poster print is the right choice
Pick a poster when the print has a job to do: announce, promote, direct or decorate a shared space. Typical cases:
- Retail and F&B promotions: window posters, new-menu launches, seasonal campaigns
- Events and exhibitions: agenda boards, booth panels, wayfinding signs
- Schools and offices: notices, safety reminders, classroom decoration
- Brand and lobby art: large graphic pieces that need to look clean from the entrance
Our posters are printed on matt poster paper, which has no surface shine and reads well under overhead lighting. For windows and smooth walls, choose poster sticker, a self-adhesive media you can apply straight onto the surface. If you are planning an event wall or a shop window, you can build your poster online and see every size and finish priced live before you order. That is the practical advantage of poster printing in Singapore for business use: one configurator covers size, media, lamination and mounting.

When an enlargement (or a framed print) is better
Choose an enlargement-style print when the image itself is the point: a family portrait, a wedding photo, a pet, a landscape from a trip. If you are going to frame it, hang it at home or give it as a gift, you want the finish and presentation of a photo print, not a promotional poster.
For this, the simplest route is our Photo Frames. Send the photo and we print it, mount it and frame it at A6, A5, A4 or A3 in black, white, wood or gold (gold on A4 and A3). A6 to A4 come with a table stand built in, and A3 is made to hang. If you would rather have a textured, gallery look without glass, canvas printing stretches your photo over a wooden frame with the image wrapped around the edges, ready to hang.
How to get the best result from poster printing in Singapore
Whichever way you go, the file decides the result. For posters, these are the points that matter most:
- Resolution: supply artwork at 300 DPI at the exact poster size you order. A small image stretched up to A1 will look soft, however good it looked on screen.
- File format: Adobe Illustrator (.AI), EPS or a print-ready PDF. Vector files are ideal for logos, text and flat graphics; PDF works well for photographic or mixed layouts.
- No bleed needed: posters are printed to the exact dimensions and trimmed flush, so set your document to the finished size.
- Design for distance: one message, a large headline and plenty of contrast. A busy A0 seen from three metres loses to a clean A2 with one clear idea.
- Colour mode: work in CMYK so what you see on screen is closer to what comes off the printer.
If the image is too low-resolution for the size you picked, it is flagged in the file check before printing, so you can swap in a better file instead of getting a blurry print.
Choosing the right finish for your poster
The poster paper itself is matt. The shine you see on some posters comes from optional lamination, a thin film applied over the print:
- Matt lamination gives a low-sheen finish that reads cleanly from any angle. Choose it for lobbies, exhibitions and rooms lit from above.
- Gloss lamination makes colours look richer and helps brand visuals stand out. Choose it for retail windows and product displays.
Lamination is highly recommended for anything on display. For a rigid piece, pick poster sticker and mount it on compressed foam board or black kapaline board (mounted pieces are always laminated). From there you can add a cardboard standee (A3 to A1) so it stands on its own, cut it to shape with hand cut or machine die cut, or finish a foam-mounted piece with black or white edge capping for a clean, framed-looking border without a separate frame. When you are ready, you can order your poster with exactly the size, media and finishing you need.
FAQ: poster print vs enlargement
Can I print a photo as a poster?
Yes. A good photo makes a strong poster, especially at A2 and above, as long as the file is 300 DPI at the final size. Just remember a poster is made to be seen from a distance. If you want to frame the photo and look at it up close at home, a framed photo print may suit you better.
Is a poster print lower quality than an enlargement?
Not lower quality, just made for a different purpose. A poster is tuned for impact and readability at a distance; an enlargement is tuned for close-up photographic detail. Choose by where it will hang and how far away people will stand.
What size should I choose for a wall poster?
A3 and A2 suit close-range spots within a couple of metres. A1 and A0 are the across-the-room sizes for windows, event walls and exhibition panels. Custom sizes are available on request.
Do you frame posters?
Posters are supplied unframed by default. For a framed look without a frame, choose poster sticker mounted on foam board and add edge capping.
The bottom line
If the print needs to be noticed and read across a room, choose a poster. If it is a personal photograph meant to be admired up close, choose an enlargement-style framed print or canvas. For shop windows, events, offices and classrooms, head to the poster page: pick A3, A2, A1 or A0, choose paper or sticker, add lamination or mounting, and the calculator prices your exact combination live.
